Tip Calculator

In the US and Canada, 15-20% is standard for restaurant service. Other countries have different customs — Japan rarely tips, while the UK often includes a 10-12.5% service charge.

The tip amount and total bill are divided equally among the number of people you specify. For uneven splits, calculate each person's share individually.

Standard etiquette is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, not the after-tax total. If your bill shows a subtotal before tax, use that. If only the total is shown, tipping on the total is acceptable — the difference on a typical meal is small.

Many restaurants add an automatic 18-20% gratuity for parties of 6 or more. Always check your bill first — if a 'service charge' or 'gratuity' line is already included, you don't need to add a separate tip unless you want to reward exceptional service.

A tip is voluntary and goes to the service staff. A mandatory service charge (common for large parties, catering, or certain restaurants) may or may not go to staff — policies vary by establishment. Our calculator helps with voluntary tips; always check your bill for existing charges.
