Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, newlines). Empty lines are excluded. This matches how most word processors count words.

Characters with spaces includes every character including spaces between words. Characters without spaces counts only letters, numbers, and punctuation. Most social media platforms (Twitter/X, LinkedIn) count characters with spaces when enforcing post limits.
